WRITING WITH PURPOSE: NST journalists pen knowledge in RSPC

Campus journalists of Nova Schola Tanauan (NST) represented the Schools Division of Tanauan in the recently concluded 2024 Regional Schools Press Conference (RSPC) held at Cabuyao Integrated National High School last February 27-28.

Six qualifiers for different individual categories joined other campus journalists across various schools in Region IV A – CALABARZON for the said writing of journalism expertise.

The campus press from NST include Jayvee Banta for News Writing English, Kyle Nico Miel Generoso for Editorial Writing English, Princess Angeline Platero for Sports Writing English, and Lynden Shane Canovas for Copyreading and Headline Writing Filipino, as well as Jimlex Segui and Rheann Shane Barrion for Photojournalism Filipino and English, respectively.

According to Canovas, the experience was memorable as a first-time RSPC qualifier, despite the pressure and challenges she faced for the preparation, adding that representing NST and Tanauan is already worth celebrating as the competition for campus journalism is tight in the region.

Relatively, Platero emphasized that her purpose of bringing fairness in journalistic writing motivated her amid the demands of her other responsibilities.

Despite their press conference journey ending in the regionals, these journalists remain hopeful that this will inspire other students to continue serving unbiased and fearless broadcasts of issues in the community.

Know Your NST Teacher: A Teachers’ Day Special

It’s been 9 years since Nova Schola first opened its doors to students seeking for a better future by having a formal education. We have had several batches of graduates since then, and there’s no denying that our teachers are a huge part of the growth of Nova Schola in all those years.

Our deepest gratitude to all of our teachers, from all those who had been with us, and to those who are still with us. Thank you for inspiring, caring, listening, guiding and shaping the future of our students.

And to all the teachers our there, Happy Teachers’ Day!

Now, let’s shift to a lighter tone.

Most of the time during Teachers’ Day, it is our students who often goes in front of the camera and deliver their messages to their beloved teachers. Now, to make things a little bit different and a bit more interesting, we decided to do the opposite. We conducted a short interview to some of our NST teachers. Tribute to The Pillars of Our Family

Mothers are known as the light of the family, or in Tagalog “ang ilaw ng tahanan”. Meanwhile, every Filipino knows that a father is known as the “ang haligi ng tahanan” in Tagalog, but are you aware what does that translate to into English?

The answer is in the title of this blog article. “Haligi” in English means column, it is an upright pillar, typically cylindrical and made of stone or concrete. By that definition, we can see why our fathers were described as the pillars of our family. Fathers are seen as the head of the house and the provider for his family. This may be true two or three decades ago because as of now, almost all parents share the same responsibilities in a household. Yet, there are still responsibilities in a family only a father can do better than a mother and vice versa.

So cheers to all fathers out there, Happy Fathers’ Day!

Philippine Independence Day Special

It has been 124 years since we declared ourselves free from the Spaniards, but today we only not commemorate the declaration of our independence, we also recognized the people who fought for it because if not for them, this day wouldn’t have been possible.

Sadly, it looks like that the Philippine Independence Day has been lost to being just a holiday. We are more pleased when this holiday falls on a weekday since classes and most office work are suspended. This day’s significance and meaning is slowly dying amongst us. For years, the state of history in our education system has been diminishing slowly contributing to the lack of appreciation to such events.

Hopefully, someday we don’t take for granted what our forefathers fought for and we shouldn’t just understand what are we celebrating but also why we are celebrating the Independence Day.

“Ang pagiging malaya ay isang katangian ng pagiging makapangyarihan, May sariling kapasiyahan nang walang anumang pinagpangambahan, hindi nakasandig, umaasa o nakatali sa iba, matatag at taas noong ipinaglalaban ang pansariling kapakanan at kagalingan para sa lahat. Symbolism In The Poster:

Eagle – The National Philippine Bird, freedom, Courage, and strength.

Sun – life, energy, positivity, clarity, and confidence. It is also the style of the one in the national flag of the Philippines.

3 Stars – this symbolizes Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

You can notice in the poster there’s a lot of the color blue to symbolize peace, truth, and justice (this is also the meaning of the blue color in our national flag)

The right shows the past of our country. The one near the bottom shows Emilio Aguinaldo waving our national flag for the first time during the independence day celebration.

The left side shows how our country, the Philippines, has its own way of society in all types or kinds of fields. Showing how productive and progressing we are.

The top right shows Bayanihan, a house moving tradition in the Philippines.

Bayanihan is derived from the word Bayan, which means “town”, “community” or “country”. Bayanihan literally means “being in the community”. Bayanihan culture derives from the meaning: “being helpful in the community, being one of those people who are working together to achieve a certain goal”.

Nakasanayan na nating mga Pilipino na ipagdiwang ang Araw ng Kalayaan tuwing ika-12 Hunyo. Tanda ito ng paghihirap, pagbubuwis at pagmamahal ng mga bayaning Pilipino na nakipaglaban para sa kalayaan ng ating bansa. Ngunit ang malaking tanong, dapat pa bang magdiwnag ng araw ng kalayaan o magluksa sa ating nararanasang pandemya sa kasalukuyan?

Maraming taon na ang nakalipas ng mapasailalim ang Pilipinas sa kamay ng mga dayuhan. Mga taga ibang bansa na walang alam kundi mang-agaw ng teritoryo. Bagamat mahirap, ngunit patuloy na namayagpag ang pagiging makabayan ng mga Pilipino na kilala sa pagiging matatapang at hindi sumusuko sa kahit na anong laban. Mga bayaning nagbigay ng pag-asa para sa ating innag bayan.

Ang guhit na ito ay sumisimbolo sa mga bayani na nagbuwis ng buhay para sa kalayaan at mga mamayang Pilipinong nagkaisa para sa kaligtasan ng sambayanan.

Ngayon, hindi lingid sa kaalaman ng bawat isa ang sakit na COVID-19. Marami sa ating mga kababayan ang naghirap na tila’y inagawan ng kalayaan dahil sa isang iglap nagbago ang lahat. Nagkulong sa sariling tahanan, nawalan ng hanap-buhay at nawalan ng mahal sa buhay ngunit patuloy na lumaban. Sa kasalukuyan, maituturing natin na mga bayani ang ating mga frontliners na mas piniling magserbisyo at ibuwis ang kanilang buhay alang alang sa kaligtasan ng nakakarami. Ang pandemyang ito ay masasabing isang gera ngunit hindi makita ang kalaban.

At dahil sa ideyang iyon, ipinapahiwatig nating mga Pilipino na tayo ay hindi basta sumusukos sa laban sa halip ay patuloy na nagtutulungan upang makalaya sa pandemiya. Mahirap man ang sitwasyon ba ating kinahaharap ngunit pauloy pa din tayo sa pagbabayanihan at pagkakaisa. Pagkakaisa, isang simpleng salita ngunit naging susi natin sa nakaraan pati na din sa kasalukuyan.

We are celebrating an important event in the Philippines, the Independence day. This poster exhibits the unity, courage, loyalty, sacrifices, and the desire of our fellow Filipinos to bring peace into our country and prove to other nations that we can stand with our own feet.Instead of putting white dove (the one who carries our flag) in there, we used Philippine Eagle to represent the wildness,braviness, and freedom of our country. Every profession, every person, and everyone in here is uniting just to protect and fight for our safety in the country. No one will be left behind just like what we did when we achieved our freedom before.

We wouldn’t be where we are today if not for our parents. Our parents have been with us to guide us ever since they’ve brought us to this world. They’ve equipped us with the necessary lessons, thinking, and skills to help us in our journey. Despite all the challenges and setbacks in our lives, they continue to be our pillars of strength. In honor to our parents and all the parents in the world, we celebrate the International Parent’s day.

Through Thick and Thin

Greetings, since Parents’ Day is coming this June 1, I’d like to acknowledge our parents and guardians for being with us from the very start! I call my parents “Inay/Itay”.

If I were to describe them, they may be strict at times, but they know what’s best for us most of the time.

There were times when their advice seemed to be pointless but somehow later on has proven its point.

One of the things I love most about my parents is that they never hesitate to express their love even in the littlest of things, they’ve been supportive in the littlest of achievements me and my siblings achieve, win or lose, they still stand there and clap for us. I believe we’ve all been asked a question at least once in our lives about why we love our parents. It’s something so easy yet so hard to explain. But speaking for myself, I love my parents not just because of the provision they gave but also because of the time spent with them. They’ve been with me and my siblings from the very beginning, told us stories to sleep, had fun with us, and supported us in any possible way they could, and hugged us goodbye whenever we’d part even for a few hours.

Over the last 14 years, we’ve had many experiences together, 14 years of laughter, anger, playing, educating, helping each other, teasing, and more. We’ve done many things together, there was rain, there was sunshine,

but they were still there no matter what weather. How can you not love a person who has been with you through thick and thin for 14 years and counting? The most memorable moments I’ve shared with my parents are probably whenever we’d play card games together with my siblings, it’s just for fun, no money involved of course but there could be some minor punishments for whoever the loser is, I also love it whenever we have movie nights. Memorable moments with my Inay that I probably won’t forget are whenever she’s always in for leisure time with us despite having busy days sometimes, she plays Badminton with us and she also loves going on trips. As for my father, memorable moments I won’t forget are probably when we used to wake up early in the morning when I was a kid, and we’d take a walk along our area and pick this flower I liked and then we’d continue walking and later on, go home. Parents may express love in many different ways, through words, through hugs, gifts, and devoting time, but no matter what way they do so, we still know that they try their best to express their love for us. And as their children, we give them back the love they give through many different ways as well. Love isn’t easily expressed just in the form of words, actions may speak louder than words can. We can express our love for our parents through assisting them in the things they do, giving them great hugs, spending quality time with them, and more. To the parents who have loved and given love wholeheartedly, we’d like to thank you for being with us through thick and thin and for loving us from the start. We Love You!

Parent’s Everlasting Love

I love my mother and father because they teach me to become a better person physically and mentally. They provide home, food, water, electricity and many more to me as well as my 2 sisters. My mother takes care of the house while my father works to keep the house’s electricity going and water flowing as he teaches me math. Aside from that, he sings my little sister to sleep even if he is very tired from work.

We used to go to the beach when I was young, catch huge rats, go out for road trips and we used to head to the mall. My favorite of them all was when we went on field trips which are school related. Mostly my father comes with me while my mother prepares the meal for our huge trip and stays in the house to take care of my little sister.

What I like a lot about my mother and father is that they let me have a little autonomy throughout the household, their loving care towards me and my siblings, the way my father doesn’t severely punish me for my bad actions against them and last but not the least, they highly support my interest in art. when it comes to activities, my father teaches me some mathematics while my mother brings me with her to go shopping, there are some moments where I don’t enjoy like walking a lot, having my father scolding me for not doing too well when it comes to solving and studying and the last of all, me getting tired in both situations. me, as a teenager show my love to my parents by simply honoring and obeying their rules like washing the dishes which is my favorite, cleaning the room, don’t stay up too late and most importantly, I show my love by doing anything they ask even if I’m in a very bad situation like in an Online game.

My message for them is “Mother and Father, I may be bad in the past but it is the past, I greatly appreciate what you’ve done for me, education, love, home, care, money, food, water, entertainment and many more. I’ll make sure to repay all what you’ve done to me and not leave your side when I grow into an adult. I’ll make sure to be there in times of need, love, your son.”

My Nanay is the best!

We Filipino’s are well known for a having a tightly knit family, and at the center of a every Filipino household is a loving mother. We all know how hard working our moms are. They are the first ones to wake up in the morning to make sure our breakfast has been prepared and all we have to do is eat. They make sure that all our things are ready before we attend our classes. They do a lot of things for us, but sometimes we take it for granted. Today is our chance to make up and thank our mothers for all the good things they’ve done to us. Mother’s day is a day where we can do something special for them and appreciate them. Go! Hug your moms, sometimes a tight hug is all they need to let them know how special they are to us.

What’s inside your Go Bag?

The Philippines is a disaster prone country, from typhoons, earthquakes, and most recently volcano eruption. It is important that we are always ready whenever these disasters strikes since most of them are natural and inevitable.

One preparation you can easily do is to prepare a Go Bag. A Go Bag contains essential items that you’ll need in case you need to leave your home to evacuate. Go Bag essentials such as food and water should at least last for 72 hours or 3 days in case you’ll be stranded at your home awaiting government rescue efforts. Lastly, a Go Bag should be easily accessible in you home.

To help you decide what essential items you need to include in you Go Bag, we’ve prepared an infographic as a guideline.
